Chinese company defaults on payment

The American bank, Chase Manhattan, says that one of China's biggest investment companies, which collapsed earlier this month, has defaulted on an international bond.

A Chase Manhattan spokesman said the Guandong International Trust and Investment Corporation failed to deliver a payment of almost nine million dollars due on Monday.

The Corporation is reported to owe foreign investors more than two billion dollars, and correspondents say its collapse could lead to the closure of other Chinese financial companies.
