Eight injured in chip shop blast

An investigation is due to start into an explosion at a chip shop which injured eight people.

The blast blew the windows out, sending shards of glass through the building in New Cross Road, in south-east London, just before 2100 GMT on Monday.

Eyewitness Peter Simms: Explosion "shook the whole building"
Eyewitness Peter Simms told the BBC the explosion, which turned the shop into rubble, shook the whole street.

Sylvester Ola Adebomi was working in his shop almost directly opposite when the explosion happened.

The front window of his Crystal Global Calls shop was blown out.

He said: "It was a big explosion. When I heard it I threw myself to the floor and under a table to protect myself."

Firecrews using thermal imaging equipment spent the night sifting through the rubble for anyone left trapped, but it was not thought there were any more casualties.

None of the injuries are thought to be serious.

Initial reports suggest that a gas leak may be the cause of the blast.
