Hillary fan club stands by its woman

There's just over a week to go before America's mid-term elections - elections that are regarded by many as a referendum on Bill Clinton post-Monica Lewinksy.

[an error occurred while processing this directive]But as the relationship continues to be discussed across the country, that means more pain for his long-suffering wife, Hillary.

And so, in her hour of need, a group of elderly people from a retirement village in Deerfield Beach South Florida have reactivated the Hillary Clinton fan club.

Over coffee and donuts, the agenda at one session includes the subjects of infidelity, Monica Lewinsky, and that dress, which proved beyond doubt that President Clinton had been lying.

"God forbid, if that happened to me at that age, I would have run to the cleaners as fast as I could get there," said one member.

"Monica Lewinsky was lovesick, and she had to hit on the president. She seduced him," said another. "She should apologise to Hillary for what she did to him."

Trinchi Trinchitella ensures the fan club is not just a gossip shop.The former marine has galvanised the members to send letters of support to Mrs Clinton and messages of reproach to opponents of her husband.

"Hillary's young enough to be my daughter. I have a great deal of compassion for her and for her daughter," he said.

"Somewhere in our lives, a lot of us went through the same problems. We know how she must be feeling ... We know how good she is. We want to stand by her and show there are people who care for her," he added.

As far as marriage guidance goes, most members of the fan club, with centuries of collective experience and wisdom between them, believe that Hillary is right to stand by her man.

"She should stay with him. She loves him very much. He made a boo-boo, and that's it," said one member.

Another member said the club can't fault Clinton.

"He's done a foolish thing ... but you cannot condemn a man who has been tempted by many women," she said.

But let there be no doubt - talk of impeachment does not go down well in this neck of the woods.

"The president has been a great, great president. Without all of this harassment, he would have been one of the greatest presidents," Mr Trinchitella said.

"The mistake he made we don't condone, but we want the people to stand behind him. Hillary is standing behind him, and we stand with Hillary on this," he added.

Unlike other countries, the United States has yet to have a female head of state.

But it will come as no surprise who this particular group of people would like to see as America's first real first lady.
