Monday opening

New York blue chips were firmer at the start of trade as investors mulled over a batch of mixed corporate results led by encouraging figures from AT&T.

At 0935 local time (1435 GMT) The Dow Jones was 18.54 points higher at 8470.83.

Traders were expected to be less happy about results from giant chemical concern Union Carbide.

The company reported third-quarter figures ahead of Wall Street's forecasts, but analysts had been urged by the company to lower their forecasts last month when it warned that it results would disappoint previous estimates.

The company also issued a warning for its fourth-quarter outlook.
