Pope invited to visit Vietnam

Bishops in Vietnam have invited Pope John Paul to visit the country next year.

The Vatican's press agency, says if the Vietnamese government agrees, the Pope is expected to attend celebrations in August marking the two-hundredth anniversary of the appearence of the Virgin of La Vang.

Correspondents say tensions between the Vietnamese government and the Vatican have been running high, and the authorities have said the planned celebrations would be carefully vetted and access to the venue restricted.
