A British-based Rabbi has defended a deal signed with an American men's magazine which is to publish an extract of a book he wrote on sex.

Rabbi Shmuel Boteach, an orthodox rabbi, has sold an extract from his sex manual, Kosher Sex, to Playboy Magazine.

He told the BBC the excerpt will challenge readers of Playboy to think about the harmful effects of pornography.

It is an extraordinary deal and one Rabbi Boteach fully expects to upset many in the Orthodox Jewish Community.

Playboy magazine - known more for its scantily clad female models, than for its religious ideas - plans to publish a long extract from his book, Kosher Sex, next January.

A sex manual, published earlier this year, its meant to take the secrets and the squeamishness out of sex.

In it, Rabbi Boteach argues that Jews should cement their marriages by experimenting in bed. He insists that oral sex is okay.

But he says masturbation and pornography are wrong - a point included in the Playboy excerpt.

The book caused uproar when it was published and the rabbi was forced to resign from his London synagogue.

He told the BBC that this deal was a chance to get a 'serious message' to the right audience. He denied reports that he had been paid a six-figure sum.

Rabbi Boteach is no stranger to controversy. A renowned self-publicist from Miami, he once said the 11th commandment was to do anything for recognition.
