Monday, October 26, 1998 Published at 13:43 GMT World: South Asia Gandhi launches Congress election campaign ![]() Congress President Sonia Gandhi looking for success in state elections next month Indians have been hit hard by economic sanctions imposed in the aftermath of India's nuclear weapons testing earlier this year, according to the President of the Congress Party, Sonia Gandhi. She was speaking at the launch of her party's campaign for Assembly elections in Rajasthan. Voting is due to take place on 25 November. She said the "inept handling" of international reaction to the nuclear tests by the government coalition was to blame for the sanctions. Mrs Gandhi was speaking at her first public rally in Rajasthan since the general elections nearly ten months ago. She also criticised the government's attempts to secularise the country's education system. Rajasthan is currently governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party, which is the main party in the national government coalition. At the last general elections the BJP only won five out of 25 seats. |
