UK Politics: Diary

27 October

Commons

Questions to Foreign Secretary Robin Cook.

The Commons is expected to overturn a House of Lords amendment to the European Parliamentary Elections Bill.

There has been dissent within Labour over the government plans for next June's Euro-elections to be held on "closed lists", which mean voters must vote for a party slate, as opposed to "open lists" where voters choose individual candidates.

There will also be a vote on a motion to introduce the European working time directive. The directive was implemented at the start of the month but the opposition has the right to challenge it, and some businesses have asked for more time to implement it properly.

Committees:

Agriculture Secretary Nick Brown gives evidence to the agriculture committee.

Sir Leonard Peach, Commissioner for Public Appointments, gives evidence to the public administration committee.

The trade and industry committee hears evidence on car pricing from the Consumers Association and motor industry representatives.

Lords

The Lords debates the committee stage of the Northern Ireland Bill for a fourth day.

Non-Parliamentary

The Independent Commission on the Voting System (the Jenkins Commission) holds its final meeting ahead of publication of publication of its report later this week.
