Mr Anwar's wife has said the violent demonstrations in the capital at the weekend were a measure of the growing frustation felt against the government.

Azizah Ismail told reporters that the rioting, in which more than two hundred people were arrested, reflected people's anger towards Dr Mahathir.

She denied that either herself or her husband had been co-ordinating a number of illegal gatherings following Mr Anwar's arrest last month.
