Broken leg disables McGuinness

A broken leg will prevent Martin McGuinness from representing Sinn Fein in an assembly meeting

Sinn Fein's chief negotiator Martin McGuinness has broken his leg, forcing him to pull out of a Northern Ireland Assembly meeting.

The injury happened during a charity soccer match in Londonderry.

Mr McGuinness, the MP for Mid Ulster, slipped and fell during the game on the Creggan estate.

The match was part of a local community festival.

He was treated in the city's Altnagelvin Hospital before being allowed home.

A party spokesman said: "He is taking pain killers and it is likely to be a couple of days yet before he is able to manage on crutches."

A number of engagements, including the resumption of the Northern Ireland Assembly, have had to be cancelled, added the spokesman.
