Sunday, October 25, 1998 Published at 22:44 GMT World: Americas Peru and Ecuador to sign peace treaty Latin American leaders, the Spanish King and a Papal envoy are gathering in the Brazilian capital, Brasilia, for the signing later today of a peace treaty between Ecuador and Peru to mark the end of their long-running border dispute. On the Peruvian side of the border, violent protests against the agreement led to the deaths of three people in the jungle town of Iquitos on Saturday. Correspondents say local anger has been fuelled in part by the decision to allow Ecuador to occupy a small town near the border Tiwinza previously under Peruvian control. Peru and Ecuador have gone to war three times in a border dispute stretching back over five decades -- most recently in 1995. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
