Scrappy Gloucester too much for Exiles

Phillipe Saint-Andre: Fifth try of the season

Gloucester 29 London Scottish 16

Lethargic Gloucester belatedly came to life as fly-half Simon Mannix inspired a lacklustre Premiership victory over lowly London Scottish at Kingsholm.

Mannix kicked 19 points, while French wing Philippe Saint-Andre claimed his fifth League try of the season after Scottish led 10-0 midway through a forgettable first half.

Gloucester flanker Andy Dawling marked his Premiership debut with an injury-time try, and Scottish's day was soured when they had lock Mick Watson sin binned.

Manchester referee Graham Hughes showed Watson the white card for foul play after Gloucester's Mark Cornwell was left prone on the ground, and Watson did himself few favours by pushing the fourth official as he trooped off.

Ironically, it was from a Scottish blunder that Saint-Andre struck 18 minutes from time, Exiles' Australian full-back Iain McAusland fumbling Mannix's testing kick and the flying Frenchman taking maximum advantage.

The final scoreline was slightly harsh on Scottish, who played all the first half rugby, mainly through their outstanding number eight Rob Hunter and their maturing Yorkshire half-back combination of Simon Binns and Guy Easterby.

Captain Simon Holmes touched down for a close-range try, which McAusland converted from the touchline before his opening penalty goal 10 minutes later gave the visitors a commanding lead.

But their indiscipline cost them dearly as two Mannix penalties brought Gloucester back into contention.

In the second period Saint-Andre put Gloucester ahead for the first time, then after Mannix and McAusland had exchanged further penalties, Dawling was driven over from a line-out as Scottish couldn't cope, having been reduced to 14 men.
