Cards dealt out in goalless battle

Michael Duberry tugs Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink inside the box giving away a penalty

Leeds United 0 Chelsea 0

5 Live final whistle match report
Referee Mike Reed took centre stage during a Premiership match at Elland Road that saw thirteen bookings, including two for sent off Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink also had a bad afternoon, missing the chance to give Leeds caretaker manager David O'Leary a win hours before his permanent appointment was confirmed.

The Dutch striker failed to score after winning a controversial penalty on the stroke of half time.

Leboeuf was sent off for a lunge from behind on Australian Harry Kewell after being booked during the first half for dissent.

The dismissal came as no surprise since it was the game's worst challenge.

Reed's keenness to assert his authority on the game saw him actually take the names of five Chelsea players within the space of nine first half minutes.

Leboeuf's first offence came during this period along with cards for Italians Gianfranco Zola and Roberto Di Matteo, plus Ed De Goey and skipper Dennis Wise.

Leeds duo Lee Bowyer and Robert Molenaar also found their way into the book before the penalty award.

Tame effort

Chelsea defender Michael Duberry, who just a minute earlier had a goal disallowed for offside, was harshly adjudged to have brought down Hasselbaink in the area.

Duberry inevitably saw yellow for the challenge, as his team-mates protested vehemently at Reed's decision.

Hasslebaink squanders Leeds' penalty opportunity
They need not have worried - Dutchman Hasselbaink tamely struck his penalty at compatriot De Goey, who saved the spot kick with his legs.

It was the striker's third penalty miss in six months, following two at the end of last season.

The match had started well although it was an error from debutant Leeds keeper Paul Robinson which nearly led to Chelsea taking the lead.

Robinson, playing due to a rib injury to England international Nigel Martyn, misjudged a vicious inswinging corner from Wise.

The 19-year-old pawed at thin air as the ball headed for inside the far post only for former Chelsea full-back Danny Granville to clear off the line.

But the teenager redeemed himself for his earlier mistake with a flying stop to deny Brian Laudrup's top-corner drive, and De Goey was also in action, stopping a Hasselbaink drive in the 20th minute.

More cards than chances

The second half saw another good save from Robinson to deny Zola but then came Leboeuf's dismissal, and a booking for Celestine Babayaro - the seventh Chelsea name in the book.

He was cautioned for a chop down on Hasselbaink, who was also shown the yellow card along with substitute Clyde Wijnhard and skipper Lucas Radebe.

Those cards took United's tally to five and the grand total to 13.

Both managers were unhappy about the referee afterwards.

"There was no intention to hurt anybody," complained Ginaluca Vialli, who said Reed should have taken more account of the slippery conditions.

Meanwhile O'Leary labelled the level of bookings "an absolute joke" although he was reluctant to talk any further about Reed's performance.

Later on Sunday evening the Irishman was confirmed as the club's new manager after a meeting with chairman Peter Ridsdale.
