Sunday, October 25, 1998 Published at 11:21 GMT World: South Asia Pakistani party calls for boycott of Coke The leader of Pakistan's conservative religious Jamaat-e-Islami party has called for a boycott of products such as Coke, Pepsi and McDonalds burgers. The party leader, Qazi Hussain Ahmed, told thousands of supporters that Pakistanis could make better foods than the multinationals and it made no sense to buy foreign foods. He was speaking at a rally in Islamabad, ending a huge party conference which the organisers say was intended as a show of force. Speeches at the convention accused the government and opposition of corruption and argued that Pakistan needed an Islamic revolution. The BBC Islamabad correspondent says Jamaat-e-Islami has proved it can mobilise popular support before, but has so far lacked the ability to translate this into electoral success.
