Protests in Peru against deal with Ecuador

Police in Peru say several thousand people demonstrated in the jungle city of Iquitos against the planned peace deal with Ecuador.

At least two people are reported to have been trampled to death when the police intervened to break up the march.

The peace agreement is to be signed on Monday in Brasilia by the presidents of Peru and Ecuador Alberto Fujimori and Jamil Mahuad.

It establishes the frontier along the summit of the Condor mountains, where the two countries fought a brief war three years ago.

Other arrangements include the setting up of a bi-national nature reserve, while a disputed military outpost Tiwinzta will be under Peruvian sovereignty, but occupied by Ecuador.
