Saturday, October 24, 1998 Published at 21:27 GMT 22:27 UK Sport Wenger promises calm The goal that caused Wednesday night's fuss Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is promising to keep his cool against Blackburn on Sunday after an uncharacteristic outburst against a continental referee on Wednesday night. The Gunners' French boss, whose image is that of a placid, unflappable philosopher, leapt the perimeter-fence onto the Wembley pitch on Wednesday night to confront Polish referee Ryszard Wojcik. He wanted to know why the official had awarded a free-kick which led to Dynamo Kiev's stunning last-minute equaliser against Arsenal in the Champions League. At that stage he was not aware that the Ukrainians had seen a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside.
Matches with Blackburn provided key moments in Arsenal's magnificent last season. When they lost 3-1 at home to Rovers in December it looked like the end of their title ambitions, but a four-month unbeaten run after Christmas included a 4-1 romp at Ewood Park at Easter. Wenger said: "The first-half of that game was probably our best 45 minutes since I arrived here." Adams doubftul Wenger is likely to be without skipper Tony Adams at Ewood Park. The inspirational centre-back suffered agonies with a recurring back problem despite his superb display at Wembley and Wenger said: "I will give serious consideration to resting him at Blackburn." French midfielder Emmanuel Petit is also likely to stay on the sidelines to complete his recovery from a hamstring injury in time for Wednesday's trip to Derby in the Worthington Cup. But Patrick Vieira is back from European suspension and Wenger insisted: "This game with Blackburn is more important to me than our next one in the Champions' League in Kiev. "Winning the Premier League again is still the priority. I believe it is the true test of champions that they can go on winning it year after year." He needs a good result after a recent run of disappointing league results culminating in last week's home draw with Southampton. Rovers injury worries Rovers boss Roy Hodgson is more concerned about finally getting his side's season underway this year after only two wins in nine Premiership matches.
"And it is my job to make sure that the knowledge, system or teamwork that the players need has been imparted. "You need to make sure that the players know they are respected by you and that you have belief in them." His resources are limited by injury, although Chris Sutton may be back after a month out with ankle trouble, but broken arm victim Kevin Gallacher definitely misses out. |
