Hundreds of council employees are reported to have dumped rubbish onto the streets and overturned vehicles on one of the city's busiest roads. Riot police later took up position outside the offices of the mayor, Solomon Tawenga, who the workers accuse of corruption and inefficiency. There have been several other protests directed against the mayor recently, who's been criticised for building himself a mansion while the council failed to provide basic services. Last Monday, the mayor had to be rescued by riot police from a protest by a group of women demanding their water supply be restored. On Tuesday six-thousand people handed in a petition protesting at local tax increases. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
