Weather hits Saturday sport

Wet weather across the UK has forced the cancellation of much of the weekend's sporting programme.

Eight of Saturday's Nationwide League football matches were postponed and two more were abandoned midway through.

The Scottish Premier League match at Dundee was one of seven casualties there.

The entire Welsh rugby union programme was also cancelled, along with some English and Scottish matches.

Saturday's race meeting at Newbury was another victim.

The fixture, due to be televised on BBC One, was called off after an inspection due to waterlogging.

A course spokeswoman said: "We've abandoned the meeting. It has been raining non-stop and it is now absolutely horrendous."

Feature race at today's meeting, due to be the last of the season on the Flat at Newbury, was the Group Three St Simon Stakes.
