Shearer denies bust-up

Alan Shearer: "There was no row - simply a frank exchange of views about the team's performance"

England captain Alan Shearer has rejected claims he had a dressing-room row with coach Glenn Hoddle after the Euro 2000 qualifier in Luxembourg.

Both Shearer and Hoddle reacted angrily to a report in The Sun newspaper which suggested the England captain had questioned Hoddle's role as manager after the match.

Football Association chief executive Graham Kelly earlier revealed that Hoddle and Shearer were prepared to take legal action over the story - but the newspaper has now accepted their denials.

In Sunday's edition a spokesman for the paper says: "We totally accept Alan Shearer's account and are sorry for any embarrassment caused to Alan and to Glenn Hoddle."

Shearer said: "I am delighted that this matter has been settled amicably and quickly.

"There was no row and no revolt. There was simply a frank exchange of views about the team's performance. Glenn Hoddle has my full support."

Hoddle said: "I am very happy the matter is concluded. The support of my players is of prime importance to me - as with any manager."
