Spy who snagged Middle East deal

The signing of the Middle East peace agreement was held up for several hours after Mr Netanyahu asked the United States to release the convicted spy, Jonathan Pollard.

Pollard was arrested in 1985 and jailed for passing military intelligence documents to Israel.

A serving navy intelligence analyst at the time, Pollard is said to be the only American ever convicted of spying for an ally of the United States.

After discussing the issue with Mr Netanyahu, President Clinton agreed to review the Pollard case with no conditions attached.
