Average age for Nigerians just 17 - survey

The latest survey by Nigeria's Population Commission estimates that the population has risen by twenty million in the seven years since the last census.

The population now stands at an estimated to one-hundred-and-eight million.

The Commission found that Nigeria had a young and rapidly growing population, with an average age of seventeen for both men and women.

Almost half the population were boys under fourteen years-old, while only three per cent were over sixty-five.

Nigeria is Africa's most populous country.
