EU signals action on illegal immigration
A group of asylum seekers
The European Union signalled a swift reaction today to the rise across the continent of right-wing anti-immigration parties. The Prime Minister of Spain, which holds the rotating EU presidency, promised a series of decisive proposals to tackle illegal immigration. Jose Maria Aznar, in London meeting Tony Blair, said the EU's external borders had to be tightened and people-traffickers targetted. Aid could be witheld from non-EU countries that didn't co-operate.
