It wouldn't have been the same in shell suits!
Fred Astaire hardly needed the trappings of white tie and tails to impress on the dance floor and until now, the British Dance Council has encouraged ballroom enthusiasts to wear the formal costume. However, that could all be about to change....

In an effort to spice up ballroom dancing's image and attract younger "dance sport atheletes"- that's what they're called - modernisers are urging the Council to change the rules of dress.

In practical terms that means men wearing lounge suits, waistcoats and trousers - all anathema to the traditionalists who fear an invasion of the shellsuits.
