In pictures: Timor's independence day
East Timor, celebrated its hard-won independence from Indonesia as the United Nations passed over authority to the East Timor Government and President Xanana Gusmao was sworn in.
Xanana Gusmao was sworn in as president of the world's newest country
The national colours were everywhere as people cheered their independence
UN Secretary General welcomed Timor into the international community and honoured the fight for independence
And the former enemy, Indonesia, joined the celebrations as a friend
There was a strong religious element to the ceremony in this mainly Catholic country
The day was rounded off with a spectacular fireworks display
