Prison hit by inmate disturbance
Saughton Prison
Around 40 inmates were involved in the incident
Chiefs at Saughton Prison in Edinburgh are continuing their efforts to bring a disturbance involving around 40 inmates under control

Emergency service were called to the prison, when trouble flared in an accommodation block on Saturday afternoon.

The Scottish Prison Service, which runs the jail, said negotiators had been trying to bring the remand prisoners to order.

Saughton was the scene of a prison siege on 14 June 2001 in which two nursing officers were taken hostage.

Talks ongoing

Scottish Prison Service spokesman Tom Fox said no prison staff were involved in the incident.

Inmates are believed to have barricaded themselves into one section of Glenesk Hall remand wing.

He said: "We are working towards bringing this to a peaceful conclusion. There are no hostages and no reports of any staff involved".
