Children in hospital after rescue
The group was trapped by two high rivers
The group was trapped by two high rivers
Four children have been treated in hospital after their group was rescued by helicopter from the Mourne Mountains in County Down.

After their campsite was washed out, the group of six children and two adults tried to make their way down from the Annalong Valley early on Saturday morning.

However, they were trapped by swollen rivers.

Ed Kilgore: "Leaders were prepared"

The Mourne Mountain Rescue Team brought in a helicopter from Wales to get the group to safety.

Ed Kilgore from the team said the six boys and their leaders were prepared, but were unlucky.

"They made the right decision to evacuate," he said.

"It was just unfortunate that when they got to the bottom of the track to where they were going the river had risen so much that it would have been dangerous to cross.

"They asked ourselves to go in to help them out. I think if the helicopter had not been available it would have been long drawn out and could have had a different end result."
