Tanzania faces condom shortage

The Tanzanian Government says the country is facing a shortage of condoms, with only a million currently in stock.

The announcement comes after the United Nations Population Fund withdrew 10 million condoms which were found to be defective.

The Deputy Minister for Health, Dr Hussein Mwinyi, said the contraceptives would be returned to the manufacturers in China .

The UN's population fund has said it will replace the condoms.

In the meantime, it has said it will not accept any more condoms from the Chinese supplier and it will investigate the laboratory in Singapore where the contraceptives are tested before being distributed.

About 50 million condoms are used each year by Tanzanians.
