Peru military appeal against arrest

Lawyers for 12 Peruvian military officers accused in connection with the killing of left-wing rebels five years ago have appealed against an order for the officers' arrest.

The arrest warrant was issued earlier this week after a new forensic report suggested that some Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) guerrillas had been killed after they had surrendered to the authorities, in violation of international law.

The guerrillas were captured during a raid to release hostages in Lima.

President Alejandro Toledo and other politicians have expressed displeasure over the action against the officers.
