Aaliyah up for four awards
Aaliyah was just 22 when she died
Singer and actress Aaliyah, who died in a plane crash last year, has been honoured with four nominations at a black TV awards ceremony.
The Queen of the Damned star is up for awards for both her singing and acting at the second Black Entertainment Television (BET) awards. Aaliyah was just 22 when she was killed with eight others when the Cessna they were flying in crashed on take off in the Bahamas.
The BET awards honour musicians, actors, and athletes. Aaliyah, who was seen as one of the fastest rising stars in the US, is also up for awards for best female R&B singer, actress and single for Rock the Boat. UK singer Craig David, who recently broke into the notoriously difficult US market with two top 20 singles, is up for two awards. The Southampton garage star is up for best new act and best male R&B singer. His album, Born To Do It, has been on the Billboard album charts for 42 weeks, selling more than a million copies. Achievement Grammy-winning singer Alicia Keys is up for three BET awards, tying with new US boyband B2K. Both acts are taking on David in the new act category along with Tweet and Ashanti. Veteran dance stars Earth, Wind and Fire will receive a lifetime achievement award while boxing legend Muhammad Ali is to receive the humanitarian award. In the acting awards Aaliyah faces competition from Oscar-winner Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, Jada Pinkett-Smith and Vivica A Fox. Academy Award winner Denzel Washington faces Eddie Murphy, Chris Tucker, Morgan Freeman and Will Smith for best actor. The awards ceremony takes place in Los Angeles on 25 June.
