Youth site goes online
The site draws together a variety of issues
A website has been launched which pulls together a host of subjects of interest to young people in Scotland.
The portal, operated by the national youth charity Young Scot, features information, entertainment and helplines as part of its 17-channel service. Users can put forward their points of view on issues of the day, through an online discussion board. Scotland's First Minister Jack McConnell, who attended the launch, said it would yield "real, practical benefits" for young people.
The £1.4m project, aimed at the 12 to 26 age group, also provides information on topics such as Europe, housing and relationships. Welcoming the site, Mr McConnell said he was confident it would prove to be a hit. "The youth information portal is an excellent concept with real, practical benefits for young people," he said. "The information it contains can empower young people to make better, informed decisions and choices about their life, whether it is careers, health issues or topical matters of interest to them." 'Active participation' The website also offers users the chance to take part in an on-line vote and consultation about topical issues. "The portal is not about young people passively sitting in front of a computer screen, but active participation, where like-minded individuals are encouraged to come together and interact," Mr McConnell said. "The portal is inclusive, it can be personalised to suit the needs, interests and location for people aged 12-26. "I am delighted to support this project and I am confident that the combination of knowledge, diversity and fun it offers will prove popular with young people throughout Scotland."
