Comedy stars in anti-euro film
Tim Nice-But-Dim "is in favour of the euro"
Some of British comedy's biggest stars have joined forces with Labour backbenchers to make an anti-euro film.
Harry Enfield - a former Labour donor - Rik Mayall and Vic Reeves have all contributed sketches to the film, which campaigns against the single currency.
Cinema goers can expect to see the 90-second film in June, when it will be shown before some of the summer's blockbusters. The film also includes contributions from Labour's former sports minister Kate Hoey and backbench MP Diane Abbott, who have already lined up against the euro. The film, which has reportedly cost about £1m to make, is directed by former Comic Strip member Peter Richardson.
Rally Enfield's section of the film features his upper-class character Tim Nice-But-Dim, who says "Yah to the euro" - but then admits to have no reason for supporting the currency except "it sounds like urine". And Mayall dresses up as Adolf Hitler to tell a Nuremburg-style rally that the euro is inevitable, only for the crowd to roar back: "No".
George Eustice, co-director of the Europe Yes, Euro No campaign said: "The pro-euro lobby are heavily dependent on the political establishment to lead their campaign. "We see this as a great opportunity for us. We will build a people-based campaign and we will not rely on political figures to make our case." But Simon Buckby, campaign director of Britain in Europe, told BBC News Online: "We always knew the 'no' campaign were a bunch of comedians."
