The woman who accused former Tory politician Neil Hamilton and his wife Christine of sexual assault has been charged with perverting the course of justice.

Nadine Milroy-Sloan, 28, from Grimsby, north Lincolnshire, was arrested on 31 January by officers from Scotland Yard's Serious and Organised Crime Group.

She was charged on Thursday with falsely alleging rape and serious sexual assault leading to the arrest of Barry Lehaney, Neil Hamilton and Christine Hamilton.

The Hamilton were completely exonerated

The trainee college lecturer will appear at Horseferry Road Magistrates Court in London on 16 May.

She has previously said she stood by her original complaint despite the Hamiltons being completely exonerated by the police.

Last year she alleged she had been sexually assaulted by Mr and Mrs Hamilton at a party.

She claimed that the Hamiltons and Mr Lehaney, a 61-year-old retired financial adviser, attacked her in a flat in Ilford, east London.

Libel action

The former Tory politician and his wife were arrested as the allegations were investigated. They were questioned but the case was dropped.

Mr Lehaney was also released without charge.

The Hamiltons strenuously denied the allegations.

At his Cheshire home on Thursday, Mr Hamilton told the BBC: "We look forward to the ultimate resolution of the matter, probably next year."

The Hamiltons are pursuing a libel action against Ms Milroy-Sloan, whose assets were frozen by the High Court.

She has since declared herself bankrupt.
