Queen's Scottish tour outlined
The Queen will be accompanied by Prince Philip
The Queen is a planning a whistle-stop tour of Scotland that will take her from the Isle of Lewis to the Borders as part of her Golden Jubilee celebrations.
The 1,000-mile round trip will take seven days to complete later this month. The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland will be opened by Her Majesty, who will also address a regular sitting of the Scottish Parliament. She is due to open the Falkirk Wheel, the world's first rotating boatlift and the final piece of the £78m Millennium Link project connecting the Union and Forth and Clyde canals.
The 35-metre high structure, which allows boats to travel coast to coast across Scotland, was badly damaged by vandals just weeks before it was due to begin operating at the beginning of this month. Stirling will be formally handed its Letters Patent, the official papers which confer city status, in recognition of it being made Scotland's newest city. The Queen will base herself at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh for the duration of her visit. Another fixture of the week, a garden party at the Palace, will feature 50 people born on Accession Day in 1952. The Queen's itinerary includes visits to the Isle of Skye, a catering college in Stornoway and the northern Highland town of Wick.
Her Majesty will also stop off in the Borders town of Lauder, which is celebrating its 500th year as a Royal and Ancient Burgh, having been granted its charter by King James IV of Scotland. In Aberdeen she will address MSPs during the Scottish Parliament's one-week stay there while its usual home on the Mound is occupied by the Church of Scotland's General Assembly. Although public figures - including the Queen - have addressed special sessions at Holyrood before, none has spoken before a regular sitting of the parliament. Her Majesty will open The Space, the new home of Scottish Contemporary Dance, during a visit to Dundee. |
