Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has vowed to retaliate after a suicide bomber killed 16 people in the town of Rishon Letzion near Tel Aviv.

He promised that "Israel will act strongly" and cut short his visit to the US to fly home for an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss the latest crisis.

The US administration insisted the latest attack would not change plans to find a political solution to the conflict in the Middle East, but many believe that this might be the start of a new spiral of violence.
