Liberian rebels attack another town

Rebels are reported to have intensified their campaign against Liberian Government forces by attacking the town of Kley.

A spokesman for the rebels, William Hanson, said their forces had taken over the town, some 40 kilometres northwest of the capital Monrovia.

The Liberian Defence Minister, Daniel Chea, confirmed the attack, but said skirmishes were still continuing.

The latest bout of fighting comes a day after the Liberian parliament extended by six months the state of emergency in the country, amid concerns about the continued fighting between government forces and rebels.

On Friday the rebels said they had taken control of the strategically important town of Gbanga, a claim denied by the government.
