Indian rebels torch train
Police in the Indian state of Jharkhand say left-wing militants have set a train on fire and blown up a stretch of track in the Latehar district. The police said members of two outlawed groups, the Maoist Communist Centre and the People's War Group, had launched similar attacks near two other railway stations in Jharkand over the past few days. The violence follows a strike called by the two groups to protest against a new anti-terrorism law, as well as what they describe as police atrocities in Jharkand. Correspondets say the two left-wing groups often target Indian government property in what they say is a fight for the rights of the landless poor. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
