J-Lo 'set' for modern day opera
Singer and actress Jennifer Lopez is set to star in and produce an updated version of the opera classic Carmen, according to reports.

Variety newspaper reports a script has been written by Craig Pearce, Baz Luhrmann's screenwriting partner on Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet and Strictly Ballroom.

Destiny's Child star Beyonce Knowles took the lead role in a hip-hop version of Bizet's enduring opera last year.

Lopez has previously starred in Out of Sight, The Cell and The Wedding Planner as well as scoring pop hits with Love Don't Cost a Thing and Play.


Rooftop acrobat signs for Nike

David Belle - the star of the BBC's promo film Rush Hour - has signed a deal with Nike.

Belle garnered attention practising Le Parkour, a new "urban sport" in France involving assault course type stunts across rooftops.

Agent Jean-Pierre Bosson told BBC News Online the new Nike deal involved sponsorship by the trainer manufacturer as well as appearances in three "humorous" commercials in the US.

Belle - who appeared in Brian de Palma's Femme Fatale - is also said to be in negotiations with Fifth Element director Luc Besson over a possible role in an upcoming project.


Stunt accident kills Russian actor

A Russian actor and director was killed when a stunt he was performing went wrong.

Andrei Rostotsky lost hold of a rope while filming One's Own Border, which he was directing and starring, and later died in hospital.

The 45-year-old had always preferred to do his own stunts during his career, which began in the 1970s.

He was the son of renowned director Stanislav who made films about Soviet life from World War II to the sweeping changes of perestroika.


Multimedia award for Kravitz

US singer and songwriter Lenny Kravitz has been honoured for his multimedia achievements in Microsoft's inaugural Windows Media Innovation Award.

The award was bestowed on Kravitz's for his "groundbreaking example of how to deliver music on the internet", reports Billboard.

He was the first artist to qualify for a Grammy nomination from online sales of a download.

The prize is $25,000 (£17,000) cash and $25,000 in software to donate to favoured charities.


Born and Bred success rewarded

A new series of Born and Bred has been commissioned following the success of its first outing.

Set in the 1950s, the GP father-and-son drama attracted 6.6 million viewers for it second show, beating the well-established ITV1 show Where The Heart Is.

BBC1 controller Lorraine Heggessey said: "Fantastic writing, excellent production values and enjoyable performances have combined to make a genuinely popular show.

"I look forward to its return next year."


Corrie to celebrate Golden Jubilee

Coronation Street is to broadcast a special hour long-episode to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee.

The regular cast will be dressing up in 17th-Century costume for a re-enactment of a Civil War battle.

Characters including Roy Cropper, Fred Elliot and Maxine Peacock will be involved in the action.

The special will be screened on 3 June.
