Indonesian refugees 'face poverty'

A new survey has found that more than one million Indonesians driven from their homes by sectarian and social unrest suffer from alarming levels of poverty and unemployment.

The preliminary survey was carried out by the Indonesian government and the United Nation's World Food Programme.

It found that more than half the internally displaced people surveyed were unemployed and lived below the poverty line.

It also found very high rates of illness and serious sanitation problems, with 80% of those surveyed saying they had no access to latrines.

A spokeswoman for the World Food programme, Heather Hill, said the results show the need to move quickly to solve the problem by enabling the families to return home or settle permanently elsewhere.
