Hong Kong population set to swell

Hong Kong - already one of the most densely populated cities on earth - is expecting to see its population swell to 8.7 million over the next 30 years.

That's an increase of about two million people, roughly 30%.

The new projections released by the Census and Statistics department show that migration is expected to account for 93% of the population growth.

Under existing government policy, 150 mainland Chinese are allowed to migrate to Hong Kong every day.

At the end of last year, 6.7 million people lived in Hong Kong, which has an area of just over 1,000 square kilometres.
