Two more dead in Gujarat

Two people have died in a fresh round of communal violence in the Indian state of Gujarat.

A Muslim teacher is reported to have been burnt to death by a crowd as he was going to work in the city of Ahmedabad.

Another man, whose religion has not been reported, was stabbed to death.

Overnight, ten people, including five policemen, were injured when large crowds hurled stones and crude bombs at each other in Ahmedabad.

A curfew remains in place in some areas of the city.

They are the latest incidents in more than two months of communal violence in which nearly nine hundred people, mainly Muslims, have died. Yesterday/ On Monday, the upper house of the Indian parliament unanimously passed a motion calling for government intervention in Gujarat.

The Indian government has promised to take steps to stop the violence, but has refused opposition demands for the dismissal of the Gujarat chief minister, Narendra Modi.
