Toddler dies in lake tragedy
Policeman and blue light
A two-year-old boy has died after falling into a lake while playing in his grandparents' garden.

The toddler was visiting their home in Mere, near Knutsford, Cheshire, on Monday, when police believe the pair became distracted by a knock at the door.

A spokeswoman for Cheshire Police said the boy then appeared to have slipped through a gap in the garden fence and fallen into the water.

Emergency services were called shortly before 1500 BST and attempts were made to resuscitate the child at the scene.

He was then taken to Wythenshawe Hospital, but died later.

His family were at his bedside, according to police.

The spokeswoman said the toddler's death was not being treated as suspicious and a file was being prepared for the coroner.
