In pictures: Death of Pim Fortuyn
Holland's controversial right-wing politician Pim Fortuyn was shot dead on Monday as he left a radio station in the city of Hilversum.
His murder comes just over a week before the country's general elections are due.
'Professor Pim' was well known for his anti-immigration stance and strong views on Islam
His political dreams ended abruptly as a gunman opened fire on him in a car park
Police said they had arrested one suspect - a 33-year-old white Dutchman
Many paid their respects to the maverick leader, including the mayor of Rotterdam (l)
Supporters angered by the attack threw stones, bottles and metal barricades at police
While many disagreed with his politics, few would have wanted his career to end in this way
