Empey to hear jobs concerns
Shortage of prawns had contributed to their decision
A South Down assembly member is to raise the closure of a seafood processing plant with Economy Minister Sir Reg Empey on Tuesday.
About 150 jobs are to go with the closure of Young's Blue Crest prawn packing factory at Kilkeel in County Down. The firm is re-locating its operation to Scotland.
The SDLP's PJ Bradley is hoping a package can be put together to persuade Young's Blue Crest to stay in Kilkeel.
The company announced its intention to quit Kilkeel last Friday. Company spokesman Michael Mitchell said a shortage of prawns had contributed to their decision. But South Down MP Eddie McGrady urged Young's to review its closure. Mr McGrady: "This will mean the closure of two of their factories, and the retention of one factory for the purposes of raw material reception, grading and freezing facilities at the harbour. "This is a highly regrettable decision and represents a poor repayment for the years of loyal service and commitment by their employees and also the local community in Kilkeel and the Mournes."
