Two die in house fire

A woman, three children and a dog survived the fire

A nine-year-old boy and a 41-year-old man have died in a house fire in Leeds.

Emergency services were sent to the terraced house in Nowell Crescent in the Harehills area of the city at about 0700 BST on Monday.

A woman and three other children escaped and are now in Saint James' Hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be serious.

Detectives said an investigation was underway, but it was too early to speculate about the cause of the blaze.

'Dead at scene'

The child who died was not related to the man and is thought to have been a visitor to the address.

A pet Rottweiler dog is believed to have survived the fire.

A West Yorkshire police spokesman said the child and the man would not be named until officers had contacted their next of kin.

He said: "We were called to an address in the Harehills district of Leeds.

"It is believed the man and child were declared dead at the scene.

"A woman and three children were taken to nearby St James' Hospital.

"The extent of their injuries are not believed to be serious.

'Extensive damage'

"We have no idea of the cause of the fire at this stage but it is not believed to be suspicious, although we are keeping an open mind."

Station officer Richard Cocks from Gipton fire station said: "It was a very serious fire. There was extensive damage to the house.

"Crews from several fire stations went to the scene.

"When the fire officers arrived there were people on the pavement who had escaped from the house but it's not yet clear how they got out."
