Burmese refugees attacked
At least 40 Burmese Rohingya refugees living in a camp near the Bangladeshi coastal town of Cox's Bazar have been injured during a violent clash with local people.
Police officials say a group of local youths attacked the refugees while they were constructing a new shelter. Nearly 6,000 Rohingya refugees live in the camp. They came from neighbouring Burma to escape what they described as repression and religious persecution ten years ago. Camp officials said new sheds were being constructed for 5,000 refugees from another camp who were being moved for security reasons. There are nearly 20,000 Rohingya refugees living in two separate camps in the south-eastern Cox's Bazar district. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
