Police revisit murder scene
Mr McDonald was shot dead as he went to pick up a fare
Police in County Tyrone have revisited the scene of the murder of a taxi driver.
Barney McDonald was shot dead as he sat in his taxi waiting to collect a passenger in Donaghmore last week. Two gunmen killed the Catholic father of six outside Arthur's Snooker club in Annaghbeg Park on 17 April. Speaking before the reconstruction on Wednesday, the district commander for the area, Chief Superintendent Eddie Graham said they were still following a number of lines of inquiry, but needed hard evidence to catch the killers.
It is understood there had been a history of conflict between Mr McDonald and his family and republicans. In 1999, Mr McDonald's son Paul was exiled from Northern Ireland by the IRA. In 2000, when he returned home for the birth of his child, he was badly beaten by a gang of men who came to his home. Paul McDonald was killed in a car crash a short time later. Another of Mr McDonald's sons was also killed in a car crash some years previously. However, Sinn Fein said after Barney McDonald was murdered that republicans were not involved. |
