Croatian parliament sacks chief prosecutor

The Croatian parliament has voted overwhelmingly to sack the country's chief state prosecutor, Radovan Ortynski.

Mr Ortynski resigned last week, saying the government and media were unduly influenced by organised crime.

But by 98 votes to one with four abstentions, deputies rejected his resignation and dismissed him for failing to tackle organised crime syndicates.

The vote bars Mr Ortynski from continuing to work in the prosecution office.

Resignation would have allowed him to carry on in another role. Deputies are now considering candidates for a new chief prosecutor.
