Greece shuts schools over deadly bug
Scientists are still trying to identify the mystery virus
All Greek educational institutions were closed on Wednesday to try to prevent the spread of a deadly virus which has already killed three people.
Some 32 people have been infected by the unidentified virus, which targets the heart and respiratory system, Health Minister Alexandros Papadopulos announced. Thirteen cases alone were reported on Tuesday, leading the ministry to announce the emergency closures and to place hospitals on heightened alert. Children are not however particularly vulnerable to the virus, but Mr Papadopulos said that closing the buildings would nonetheless help to stem its spread. They will remain shut for the rest of the week. The Easter holidays begin next week. Flu-like symptoms People have also been warned to stay away from crowds, and pay particular attention to hygiene. Ministry officials say they are hoping tests will provide conclusive results about the identity of the virus on Wednesday. Symptoms include aching muscles, high temperatures and difficulty breathing. The three victims who died of the virus were all women. Two of them came from the island of Crete, and one from the northern Greek town of Ioannina.
