Looking for Karadzic: Your comments
Maggie O'Kane, the Guardian's celebrated war correspondent, goes in search of Europe's most wanted, former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic.
These are some of your comments on the programme.
What do you think this seven-year failure to take action says about the resolve of European politicians to render justice to these victims of genocide?
Is Europe really willing to prevent a re-occurrence of genocide? I know from many personal stories that the survivors of massacres are not welcome amongst a number of their European neighbour countries, while the perpetrators receive medals and hideouts. .
All credit to Maggie for covering such a sensitive issue in such a professional way! All areas of the story were well covered and well presented. I just want to know is why you've made it your personal mission to find Karadic, because the world still continues to overlook innocent Muslims civilians as humans!!!
Humanity is paying a huge price for justice!!!!!
I have followed events in Yugoslavia since going there in 1983 to watch Wales draw 4-4 with Yugoslavia in Titograd (now Podgorica). We also went to Niksic, which featured in the programme, for the Under 21 International. It may seem bizarre but whilst in Italy last week for the Cycling Giro D'Italia (Tour Of Italy) and waiting for the finish in Varazze nr Genoa, the spitting double of Karadzic walked past me, enough for me to make a double take!!!!
I must protest at an omission in the otherwise excellent Correspondent on Sunday evening. You mentioned Karadzic's role in the Srebrenica massacre in 1995. As you know this was designated a UN 'Safe-haven' in 1993, but throughout the ensuing two years the Muslim forces under the command of Nasir Oric based WITHIN Srebrenica stole out of the enclave and allegedly murdered hundreds, if not thousands of Serbs in villages around Bratunac. Oric has not been indicted for war crimes thus far. Surely this fact confirms Serb suspicions that the indictments are disproportionately targeting 'our' perceived enemies, the Serbs?
I thought this was a well-made documentary. I also cannot believe the Serbs are living in denial and holding up Karadic as a Hero or some sort of saint, its sickening
I think Maggie's programme was first class. The Serbian Orthodox church are clearly hiding Karadzic - none of the religious leaders denied that he, as an indicted war criminal had taken shelter with them in the past. Maggie was right to press them as she did. Remember the Serbian Orthodox Church needs Serbian Nationalism to survive. After all, the church's silence throughout the Balkan wars was deafening.
The much bigger scandal in Bosnia today is that there is no political consequence of genocide committed in war 1992-1995. Karadzic creation Republic of Srpska is pretty much alive and what would be a fate of Karadzic is not so important any more, he succeeded in his aim, he ethnically cleaned a half of Bosnia and has got legitimacy from Western government. That is an essence of issue; everything else is just empty talk. That is a real topic because it shows up very clearly that genocide is worthwhile.
Very rude and unethical journalistic behaviour by Maggie. I wonder whether she would interrupt the church service in her church like she felt free to do in Orthodox Serbian Monastery. Pure and blatant tabloid sensationalistic journalism!
I would recommend to everybody - including Maggie O'Kane - willing to get a glimpse into all these region wars and their people to see recent movie "No Man's Land" by Danis Tanovic. Interview techniques working some places might not do the job everywhere.
My question is why do we nobly and rightly chase Neo-Nazis from WW2, Serbians and Bosnian-Serbs and do nothing to punish the American's who religiously, murderously and illegally destroyed a country, which was once Vietnam. So my plan of action would be to stop chasing ghosts, stop wasting man-hours and leave Karadzic to rot alone because his crimes have been committed. Concentrate on the future because surely an adequate homage to his victims would be to secure peace in a region that richly deserves it.
If it is a matter of money needed to apprehend the #2 butcher (who daily defended the Serb's on international TV) go to the UN. His support is nothing more than a few bigots.
The gratuitous suggestions that the U.S. is not interested in justice in Bosnia are demonstrably untrue. The U.S. has spent hundreds of millions of dollars deploying troops, bankrolling ICTY, and otherwise putting spine into the Europeans to try to bring peace to EUROPE. Your closing comment that "Americans had to die" before the U.S. would make an effort to hunt down war criminals in Bosnia is as offensive as it is inaccurate.
