Afghan Mujahideen leader dies

A former Afghan Mujahideen leader, Mohammad Nabi Mohammadi, has died in Pakistan at the age of 81.

He had been suffering from tuberculosis for some time, and died in hospital in Rawalpindi.

Maulvi Mohammadi was one of seven main Pakistan-based Mujahideen leaders fighting against Soviet forces in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

Maulvi Mohammadi was from the central province of Logar, but his party, the Harakat-i-Inqilab-i-Islami, had pockets of support in many parts of the country.

After the fall of the Soviet-backed government, he became vice-president of Afghanistan in the shortlived Mujahideen government, but once the Taleban took power he maintained good relations with them.
